no the USPS does not auction off mail it is returned to sender or sent to dead letter storage.

PROVIDED you want to go to Atlanta or St. Paul to do this.

It is a bit more involved than that.

You can see what's available and you bid on any given lot.

You are given a card with a number on it. At the start of the auction, say, a cage of books starts at $50, you raise your card.

The auction goes until one card is standing.

$50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120.....

This goes on for hours.

The items are those that cannot be returned to sender and cannot get to their destination.

i went to one when San Francisco still had one.

There was a hamper filled with barbie items.

I walked out of there with Playboy cigars.

this is NOT true, at least for letters...they return them to the sender or send it to storage, where they are kept indefinitely...the packages are auctioned only at certain places and it's after they've been opened to see what's in them

Well that could explain what has happened to so much of my eBay stuff....that and the lyin' sellers who don't really send it.

Wonder what they do with the money from our stuff....
