John Seymour passed away about 2 years ago.

To me self-sufficiency means using as little of the world's non-renewable resources as possible. Raising your own food, both plant and animal is part of that process. In today's world real self-sufficiency is rather tough, but quite possible, since solar power and wind power can make many of life's little luxuries available. It requires living in an area of the world where the climate is conducive to productive farming and raising livestock. Survival of everyone in today's world requires interaction and inter-dependency. Even John Seymour wrote books and offered courses, so his self-sufficiency was also dependent somewhat on other people! Volunteers were also part of his self-sufficiency.

If you want to look at one of the best examples of self-sufficiency in today's world, look at Cuba. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba had to change its whole way of farming. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation with Dr. David Suzuki has done an excellent two hour documentary on how Cuba was forced to return to the old ways of farming to feed its people and they now produce almost 12 times as much food as they did when they used mechanization, and they were able to do this in about 15 years.

Interesting question. Thanks for asking it.
