The technology is here for a train that can run over 300 mph on a track and can't derail. Its called maglev, its magnetically levitated above the track but is actually built around the track. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a network for us people who don't like to fly but love to travel around the USA. Check out maglev trains.

It will be a great thing to see , but a big blow to domestic airline industry as some are already on the verge of bankruptcy.

I've been interested in maglev trains for a while, and you're right: they're awesome. It would be great if we could even have something like the TGV's in France or the Japanese Bullet Trains.

I think most of the problem is the way that the US is laid out-- when you're in a city, you have to hop in a car and ride for 10 or 15 minutes to get anywhere. We've built up our whole society around cars, and so when we need to go anywhere farther away we use aiplanes and then rent a car at the destination.

Can you imagine Americans taking the train state-to-state, and then maybe walking around when we have a shorter distance? It would never happen! We'd lose our title as the world obesity champion.

The US has a corparate government, Trains are for the people, not for companies, they are the summum of: "your government takes care of you if you can't afford a car!"
May be organise some WE WANT OUR TRAINS BACK comittee?
Your big leap ahead, is that their is no real existing finemazed network in the US. That was abolished/outsourced by the oil and car companies long time ago. (so much for a corporate government)
So all the chance of setting this new thing up, like the japanese did. They did it! (with American help...Thank you General Mac Arthur)
If you could only spend half of the annual Ministry of Defense budget, your network would be there. But why spend money on trains? It's Soldiers & Weapons all the way.
Trains are the most painstaking example of a corporate government which lets Gods corporate water run over gods field. No Liberal ever made the finemazed trains network come back...
Good luck my friend

Yes!!! We're the richest country in the world, and we have the worst national rail system of any developed country. How sad is that?????

Write your senators and congressmen, and let them know you want modern rail service nationwide, that we can be proud of. That includes high speed, and you're right - the technology is out there. We've just had politicians with other priorities, like supporting the most gas-guzzling transportation we can possibly find to make oil companies rich.

It would be great. And it probably won't happen, because American's are conditioned for air travel and against trains. It's an outgrowth of the psychological program that pushed us all towards cars, towards the assumption that a car is not a luxury item but a necessity, even a "right". So, sadly, no cool shinkansen for us.

I think they are planning something like that for the I-35 Corridor from the Mexican border to Kansas City Missouri.

That is an excellent idea. I would definitely use it. I would much rather see my tax dollars spent on a project like this than a pointless war.

The costs to build it would be prohibitive and the costs for the power of megalev would be out of sight!

You've got the Greyhound, what's wrong with that. Why does the world want to do things fast. Fast food, fast life, fast everything.
