The new SA80A2 is actually quite good. It's the same design but with HK parts. It is more accurate and has fewer stoppages. However, it is by far a too complex personal weapon for the average soldier with above average maintenance requirements (remeber the joy of cleaning gas parts?) The square-ish shaped bolt carrier is also a very poor design and still prone to not sitting properly on the rails when shoved in too quickly. The M16 is 100% better and has fewer parts that also fit more tightly (read: self-cleaning gas tube and round bolt carrier in a body that splits in two like a shotgun). Whew, there, vented a bit. Now I feel better. In answer to your question: yes. They should be sacked but they never are because they are civilians. Armed forces values and standards cannot be practically applied to bureaucrats. Come to think of it...if you can't beat em you can always join em, now can't you? They're always hiring in-house....

I believe it was in the Boer War (but I'm prepared to be corrected) that the enemy (Boer farmers for the most part) described the British soldiers as 'Lions led by donkeys'. It has always been the same.
In WW1 the Generals put a stop to 'swamp reports', maps showing where the terrain was impassable owing to shell-holes full of mud, because it made nonsense of their, 'over the top' mass attack tactics that took no account of obstacles to foot soldiers. So they didn't change the tactics, just suppressed the information that made them impossible to carry out and blamed the troops for the failure.
The cries of despair over the loss of 2000+ allied troops in Iraq since the end of the war there pales into comparison with the 60,000 British casualties (including 20,000 dead) ON THE FIRST DAY of the battle of the Somme in WW1.
The British Army is probably smaller now than it has been in living memory and still can't provide for or properly lead its soldiers.
Concerning rifles, why don't they just copy the Kalashnikov like every successful guerilla organisation has done?

Come on!!
With several million more on the dole, taxes would rise again, and then there would be no one to mis-administer the funds. Get real!
