i work at a music store that carries both yamaha and casio products, and they seem fairly evenly matched, but for some reason the casios seem to do better for us. without knowing what kind of keyboard you're really going for, i'd say go for a casio px110 model.
its got 88 weighted keys, so it feels more like a real piano, and while it doesnt have 500 sounds in its sound bank, the ones it does have are much better sounding and more realistic than most of the tones in the lesser grade models. and honestly, who ever uses all 500 of those sounds? nobody. and, we sell that model on its own for $499. that might be on the high side of what you wanted to spend, but i bet if you get that model over a lesser grade one, you wont want to upgrade for quite some time.
