Try warning the sticky wallpaper with a blow dryer first to soften the adhesive. Pill slowly and on a 45 degree angle. After it has been removed you can use a product called Goo Gone or liquid ligther fluid, or oil for lamps to remove removing adhesive. I have worked in the sign business where letter and images are made out of vinyl and have the same properties as sticky wallpaper.

I found a liquid spray product called de-solve-it at Walmart for just around $3.00. but don't leave it on too long or it might take the finish off of the countertop. Read the directions on the bottle to make sure you can use it for that. I have even used this product to take car oil off of clothes and it didn't hurt the clothes one bit.

Goo-Gone, also fabric softener will help dissolve some types of glue. If you are talking about contact paper instead of wall paper get De-Solv-It at Lowe's or any home improvement center or hardware store.

Use steam. That is what is used to remove wall paper. You can either buy or rent one. If you end up buying one, I would get a regular steamer so you can use it for other cleaning too.
