is it difficult to hook up router for home computer networking? How "strong" does router need to be?

I need to connect the upstairs computer to my base computer modem which is downstairs.

The main purpose of a router is segments network to avoid "packet noise". But a router can be used as a kind of firewall if you set up NAT (http://www.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm)

For home use i strongly recommded Lynksys solution. They are easy to configure and you can avoid the use of cables if you already have wifi installed and running. I like the WRT45G. It acts like a firewall too (inspect packtes and avoid hackers intrusion)

It's not that hard to do. A lot of the new ones today they will have instructions and wizards on how to secure it.
Just remember:
Do not broadcast your ID.
Filter Mac Address for access.
Enable WEP key or other security to connect to your network
This should keep you very safe.
If you want good range look up the PRE-MIMO routers they a little more expensive but you better better coverage and speed but the adapter has to be the same PRE-MIMO. so that you can get the same speed and coverage.

I THINIK you're asking how FAR a Router can connect to another computer.

In most cases routers state they can connect at 100 feet, However, keep in mind that is in reference to an OPEN FIELD!

So, walls, furniture, etc will decrease the actual distance. You should have no problem connecting most anywehere in your house though.

One thing to keep in mind, the HIGHER the router is placed (on top of computer desk, bookshelf, etc) the farther it usually connects.

use linksys!!! those routers are absolutley effective on what you need!!! Just remember something, if you use dimmers, if you place it close to the TV, or anything else that irradiates electromagnetic fields it will decrease it's signal strenght... and also, please try not to hook up a windows 98, ME or older computer to this router... the most recent your equipment is, the better it will work!! Hope this helps...
