Check out websites for Urban Legend, a term folkorists prefer. Also look for works by Jan Brunvand, Alan Dundes, Linda Degh, Richard Bauman, and Richard Dorson, all top-notch folklorists (though Dundes and Dorson are now dead). Urban legends are not limited to the English language. They are found all over the world, and interestingly enough, there are many similarities in motifs -- which is what the scholars study. You will find a lot to read if you really are interested in looking.
