I don't think Liverpool deserved the penalty, but I don't think Gerrard dived. He didn't go down straight away, he still tried to score and then I think his momentum brought him down.

Gerrard does dive, frequently. He's not the only one either, Rooney does, Henry has started, Arteta does....and then there's those in Italy's Serie A. I watch La Liga regular and can honestly say, as surprising as it may sound, there isn't as much diving in Spain as there is in Italy or England. I hate it. It ruins games. It ruined the 2006 World Cup.

For once, today, Gerrard didn't dive. No way. At the same time, it WASN'T a penalty either. The only intent from the Sheff United player was to win the ball, he made no contact with either Gerrard or the ball. Gerrard was too fast for the SU player and himself, his momentum carried him over and resulted in a scuffed shot (which was no worse than any player in the same position) and natural fall given the speed he was going.

The Ref gave it, Sheffield United are denied 3 points. New Season, same ludicrous Referee's.

NO Stevie did not dive, Sheffield United had been coming in with heavy challenges for most of the game, and I guess their luck ran out. Pleased to see Riise only ended up with a sprained ankle, nothing serious.

IT WAS A PENALTY... there was a foul. Gerrard falling over had NOTHING to do with the ref's decision to award the penalty... the law states that tripping or ATTEMPTING to trip is a foul.

READ THE LAWS... IT DOESN'T MATTER IF CONTACT WAS MADE OR NOT... THE INTENTION WAS THERE!!!!!!

potiga1... Perfect analysis!!!!!

I did not watch the game but your description sounds
convincing, it convinced the referee to call a penalty shot

Didn't see the game but Kem if he did in fact dive, then he probably wouldn't appeal for a penality...
