In a word - no.
Society has reached stage where so much emphasis is placed on material possessions that the general ethos that has set in is one of 'must have regardless'. Consequently an individual's property is fair game for anyone who wants it.
There is also the problem of drugs and funding a drug habit. Once hooked on drugs a person will go to pretty much any lengths to obtain more drugs and if that means mugging someone or breaking into a house then so be it.
Further, due to political correctness we now have a society in which kids are wrapped up in cotton wool and can do no wrong. The police, teachers and others in authority no longer have the powers to discipline unruly kids and the kids know this and naturally take advantage of the situation. Consequently they get away with pretty much anything and continue this practice into adult life.
Also on the subject of political correctness is the policy of adopting a softly softly approach when dealing with criminals and all sorts of weird and wonderful methods of reform are being tried.
In the UK (where I am) criminals are given jobs so as to earn respect, they're sent on holidays so they can learn to interact with other people. With the prospect of a free holiday and being given a job what deterrent is there to a criminal.
Another thing that doesn’t help is the governments insistence that crime is falling or under control. If they don't accept there's a problem how are they ever going to deal with it. In the UK the government's official crime statistics show approx 13 million crimes. This is based on the 'preferred' method of counting crimes - i.e. 'recorded crimes' . Most crimes that are reported to the police are not officially recorded so there's a huge discrepancy between reported and recorded crime. Further, only the most serious crimes are now reported as reporting a lesser crime is a waste of time. The actual number of crimes committed is estimated at between 50 and 110 million a year, rather different to what the government would like us to believe.
Not long ago I was in Africa in some of the poorest countries in the world and crime is virtually unheard of. Much trading is done on the side of the street and on a night many traders leave their wares on the roadside - there's nothing to stop someone loading up a new bed, refrigerator, set of tires etc. Well actually, there is something that stops people doing this - respect. Even if a person has absolutely nothing and there's a table full of money on the sidewalk, they wouldn't take a cent (and yes, they do have tables of money on the sidewalks - the money changes work this way and if they have to answer a call of nature for example, they just leave their table with all the money on it).
The approaches that work in combating criminality are the tried and tested ones that have been used worldwide for centuries. Teach discipline and respect and severely punish those who break the rules.

Sure, but the citizens of the community have to have the balls to do it not just talk.
Everyone carries a handgun for starters. Sure you must still go through all the legal paperwork for a firearms license but this is to keep us safe. Once the punk *** thugs realize thay are outgunned by a force they will certainly change their ways or at least get out of Dodge.
The court system has to treat these people exactly how they have treated their victims. Prisoners always scream about their rights. Well I believe once you have committed a crime you have willfully given up all your rights. Put them all in labor camps, so that they have no idle time. Just work 16 hours a day, 3 meal breaks of 30 minutes, 5 minutes for a shower, than sleep for no more than 6 hours.
Unfortunatley our pansy assed political officials would never do this because it would cost them votes. The liberals want all guns banned, and tha pacifists don't want capital punishment. I arm myself and my family. I have been assaulted twice by thugs, and each time I got the upper hand. My sister was attacked when she was in college and my father and I found the attacker and brought him to the authorities. He stumbled a few times and fell once or twice on the way to the police station, but hey he should have been more careful when choosing his vicitim.
Anyway, the only true way for we American Citizens to survive will be to take back the streets ourselves. The hands of the cops are tied by polotics. They want and need our help. America wake up and smell the coffee, these criminals will not go away by themselves. They will not get tired of feeding off weak people. History has shown we must be strong to survive. Now is the time to show our strength.
Arm yourself properly, learn from a professional how to use a firearm. Stop this crime now.

If you are talking about the United States, the answer is NO.. This is because of our archaic laws that do not really penalize the criminals. In other civilized countries, i.e. Iran, Syria, Mexico, Argentina, there is very little crime because the laws there takes the criminal off the street for good.. what happens to the criminal, no one knows
