Who's paying the bill? You REALLY need to watch their usage. The company I work for charges 40 cents a minute over the rate plan. I can't tell you how many times I've heard "What do you mean my son, daugther, husband, wife, brother, sister, mother (take your choice) used 3000 peak minutes this month?" Assuming you have a 1000 minute rate plan, that's $800 in (taxable) overage in addition to the monthly charge. Ouch!

Dr. George Carlo was the scientist funded with $25 million by the cellphone industry to research cellphone radiation after six years of study, Dr. Carlo determined that cellphone radiation disrupted heart pacemakers, damaged the blood-brain barrier, penetrated the skulls of children, and did genetic damage that could result in cancer.

Special concern for children followed from the research. Studies showed that radiation penetrated deeper into the heads of teenagers and children resulting in more exposure to potentially harmful radio waves than adults, the type of genetic damage that was found micronuclei in human blood is more likely to occur in growing tissue undergoing mitosis, such as growing brain tissue in children, the wireless industry had targeted children as a growth market and were succeeding in increasing cell phone usage among children and teenagers.

Laboratory studies from Sweden and Finland have indicated that radio waves compromise the protective blood brain barrier, thus leaving sensitive brain tissue vulnerable to toxic chemicals circulating in the blood.

It is noteworthy that other countries have taken policy steps to protect consumers. In England, a parliamentary commission recommended warnings against children using cell phones and a general notice to consumers about health risks from mobile telephones. Similar steps were taken in Germany, France, and Israel.

The head of the World Health Organization recently recommended that people use headsets to keep the radiation away from the body while using a cellular phone. This recommendation from the WHO is ridiculous, a mobile phone can still be a hazard at least 90 meters !

It depends on the age of the child. I work with children every day and in my preschool class there are parents that send their children ages 5 and 6 to school with cell phones.

Personally I believe that a child doesn't need a phone until they are old enough to pay for it. I understand that there are emergencies and instances where children need to get in contact with adults. But there are other ways to get into contact with the parents should the need arise.

Having a phone should teach responsiblity, not another pointless activity.

You should consider the age of your child. If you are trying to get them into more activities and away from their phone. Limit the days in which they can have it. Also consider getting them into a group setting such as a school program or social club. Check with your local YMCA or Rec Center for a schedule of classes.

Well let's see............................
1) waste of time and money
2) can't organize a thing since they can do it on the fly
3) hard for them to concentrate since their phone is either ringing or they're expecting it to ring
4) loss of family time
5) can't control their talk time like you could a home phone so homework and/or chores suffer
6) makes them more unsocial in a family setting or on vacation or shopping etc

Oh, and most importantly... you're the parent so if YOU don't think they should have one, DON'T allow them to have one. Grow a pair and stand up to your kids... you shouldn't need to make a speech... tell them the way it is. It's YOUR house eh?

OK, I'm tired now, lol!

Peoples identities are too wrapped up in cell phones. They feel something is wrong with them if they aren't on the phone 24/7. People lack independence.
