There was no "West Germany" in the 1940's. It was all still unified under Adolf Hitler, who was one of the worst monsters the 20th Century has produced. If you are talking about the recovery that they had after WWII, then it would have been happening in the 1950's due to the efforts of the U.S. rebuilding from the war. As a side note, East Germany, under the Soviet Union, had little recovery after the war because they were virtually slaves to the communist system. It wasn't until the fall of the Soviet Union that Germany was reunited and is bouncing back into being economically stable.

No, it didn't. At least, by the time my mom met my dad in the mid-50's it West Germany had not yet had their "Economic miracle". Things really started to turn around for West Germany by the late 50's, and into the 60's. Much of this was due to the "Marshal Plan" by which the US helped to rebuild Germany's infrastructure and industry. It took decades to come to fruition. Same with Japan's postwar economic revival, it took decades to take effect. Americans need to understand that, if our country is to try to engage in nation-building, it's not going to be an instant process.

ok, a brief history lesson here West Germany did not exist until almost 1950 due to the end of WW2 and it took time for the allies to "divide" Germany among themselves.
