Although Venus would be a much more interesting place, Venus's atmosphere is so thick and heavy it can actually crush people and things. The air pressure at Veunus's surface would equal roughly 90 Earth atmospheres.
Think of what it's like diving under the water... your ears begin to pop. Even submarines can't go too deep within our own oceans (ony to a depth of 800 feet/250 metres... the actual depth is, for some reason, classified) due to the extreme pressure... which is still quite low compared to that of the atmosphere on Venus.
(the following copied from the Wikipedia article):
Venus has an extremely thick atmosphere, which consists mainly of carbon dioxide and a small amount of nitrogen. The pressure at the planet's surface about 90 times that at Earth's surface—a pressure equivalent to that at a depth of 1 kilometer under Earth's oceans.
As to Venus being an old comet... it was only a theory raised by a Russian psychiatrist named Immanuel Velikovsky back in the 1950's... he wrote a book entitled "Worlds in Collision". However a lot of scientists still think this is just a "silly" thoery.

It is almost impossible to land a probe on Venus, much less a person. Any human would be killed. We don't even have probes that can last more than several hours on the surface. Venus does have a thick atmoshpere, but it is nothing like ours. It is believed that it does rain on Venus--not water but rather sulfuric acid.
It is not possible that Venus was a former comet. For one, comets are made up of mostly ice, and Venus is mainly rock and iron. Also, all comets continually melt as the get close to the Sun.
As to why we are studying Mars: For one there is strong evidence that it once had running water. Then there is the possibilty that there could still be water underground.

Because of Venus's atmosphere. As soon as any man made space craft or any object hits the surface it will be doomed. It will be melted by the sulferic acid rain .
Venus has a dense atmosphere, composed chiefly of carbon dioxide, which generates a surface pressure 90 times greater than that on Earth. This massive blanket of carbon dioxide is also responsible for a runaway greenhouse effect that heats the planet's surface to an average temperature of 467°C (872°F) – hot enough to melt lead.
Venus' atmosphere consists almost entirely (97%) of carbon dioxide, with clouds containing droplets of sulfuric acid along with compounds of chlorine and fluorine. These precipitate an acid rain called virga, which evaporates before it has the chance to reach the surface. In the upper part of the atmosphere, clouds swirl by at a rate of 300 km/h, driven by fierce winds .

We are looking for a new planet to live on. Mars is the best choice so far. In the martian summer, it gets as warm as Antarctica on Earth. It's not really "warm" but, on Earth there is life at those temeratures. There is water on Mars, we need water to live in space, and it is easier to find it somewhere than to bring it with us. Mars is more interesting than Venus, for these facts alone.
Venus rarely gets below 500 degrees farenheit, and the atmosphere is almost 100 times greater than earth. Even without concidering the lava and acids, Venus is like a giant pressure cooker. We have studied Venus in great detail already, we even have pictures from it's surface.
so, in conclusion:
Mars is just easier, and it will benifit us most in the future.

Venus has lost it's magnetic feild as did Mars. The thing is, Venus is a completely inhospitable "wastelnad" with sulfuric acid atmosphere and unbelieveble pressure. Mars, it's theororized , and from research on the surface, contianed water. Water is the basic buildingblocks for life. Also, the rover can cruise on the surface of Mars without being crushed form the intense pressure on Venus. Life may have once existed on Mars.

No, Venus was never a comet. Plus, with the incredible atmospheric pressure on Venus it would be reasonably improbable to put anything on the surface that would not implode and be crushed. Mars' only drawback is that it is cold. So, buildings that were constructed on Mars would last. It is less effort to one day colonize Mars than it would be to colonize Venus.

Another problem with Venus is its day. A day on Venus is about 240 Earth days long b/c it revolves so slowly (and interestingly, backwards relative to the other planets). Lots of sunlight on one spot of the surface means a lot of heat transferred to the surface that can't escape due to the prevelence of greenhouse gasses in its atmosphere. Long work week, I'd imagine, too.

in the future we are going to need another place to inhabit instead of earth and mars' atmosphere is closer to earth's than Venus, which you said had "a thick atmosphere and active volcanoes"
and it is more likely that earth was similar to Venus at the start

Left over from the cold war, Russia sent probes to Venus, US to Mars. Venus' atmosphere is so hazardous that probes break down quickly because of the temperature, pressure, and acid.
