Firstly let me say the following: Africa was not only colonized by Britian! The French, Portuguese, Belgians, Germans, and even the Italians (who tried and failed!) had colonized countries. Actually the first country in Africa that got independence, Ghana, was a British colony, so I am not sure why people think that Britain stayed on longer than the others.

The African history and its current situation is very complex. A good book to read in order to get a good overview and perspective on Africa's colonization is "The Scramble for Africa" by Thomas Pakenham.

I am assuming you are referring to sub-Sahara Africa instead of just "remaining of Africa", because the countries in North Africa are pretty well-off as well. I am also assuming that you are referring to poverty of people instead of the wealth of the countries itself, because Africa as a continent is extremely wealthy in terms of mineral wealth, oil and fertility of soil (except of course in arid regions). Why countries have problems lie in historic choices, illiterate masses and power hungry leaders and corrupt governments. Although I must ask my fellow answerers here which country, including the USA, has not had corruption occur or corrupt politicians in their ranks??? And which countries, including the USA, does not have a deficit at some point in time?

South Africa has many, many, many poor people and their are HUGE problems, but what makes SA better than most is that we have a TRANSPARENT democratic government. And best of all most of the people living in South Africa try their best to contribute to the country and make it a great country.

South Africa has a stable government, a good ecoonomy and the people there are some of the friendliest I have ever met on this Earth. I have been around the world several times and there are few countries I have not been to and South Africa ranks in the top 5 of the best places I have been. With a plce like that it's easy to attract companies to keep the economy going and the tourisim there is BIG business. Security of tourists is in my opinion THE Best in Africa. They care about their Country and their guests and that probably why they are so well off.

South Africa was a UK colony for a much longer time that the rest of the continent. The other areas of Africa gained their independence earlier but the British made sure the nations would not be able to work towards a common goal. The British often put the African into categories making certain groups better than others. There are more whites in South Africa so they are more interested in keeping that part of the continent in tact.

Excellent question, The DRC is busy with a long war and elections now, which will make a huge impact on neigbouring countries. The Coted'Ivoire is the same, and many countries in Africa.
South Africa is good because of a good economy, as you know the gold and platinum prices are very high and South African is getting very good money from that. And ofcourse other industries.
Africa is not governed by the people who will develop their countries, as no one will ever ask them what did you do for your country, you'll see them always flying all over the world for meeting and cooperation etc.. whitout any real impact on their economy.
I Love Africa , The people in Africa are the kindest in the world.

It all started in May 1652 when Jan van Riebeeck came to South Africa (Cape Town) with his three ships and family. Later on the French came here, then Germans, ect. They all started building and farming....then came the British and the country just florished even more...
Namibia and Botswana are both countries in Africa with a good economy.

who said there aren't any poor people in south africa? south africa is a developing country and the majority of the people are poor. granted south africa is better off than most of the other african countries, but that's because of our economy and that we're developing. a lot of other african countries are third world and not developing (due to wars, AIDS, corruption etc.).

I believe that Africa is so poor because of the corrupt government. Corruption needs to stop, all races should stop bringing up the past and instead focus on our future. We can all do nothing to help the past but we can all do something for our future! We are known as the Rainbow Nation but it is a pity we cannot act like it!

Coruption. All goverments in Africa(including south africa) are so rife with corruption. Any deal requires heavy under the table deals for something to be done. This causes money to be wasted on inapropiate tenders and bad useage of goverment funds.

south africa is really not that well off.we are the biggest economy on the african continent but we still have a whole lot of problems:such as hiv/aids,elevated crime levels and drug abuse.
Our biggest asset is that our country is truly stunning and this brings in tourists from all over the world. We are also richly endowed in precious metals but these are diminishing steadily.
At the moment we are trying to encourage our secondary and tertiary activities which are more prefarable to primary industries .
We try to help our neighbouring countries af far as possible but as a third world country ourselves there's only so much we can do.
