Black eye shadow? That's something that doesn't look good on anybody. It may be the style for a gothic, but it won't complement anyone. It closes the eyes and makes them look small and deep set.
If you are set on black for style or other reasons, apply your eye liner first. If you are going for goth, a heavy line on the upper and lower eyelash line. Then apply a super light shade, pure white in goths, all over the top of your eye, and black on the lid only. When your close an eye, it should come to the indentation. When you open the eye, it shouldn't come above the lashes. Black mascara on upper and lower lashes. Try applying the shadow with an eye shadow brush instead of the sponges. It goes on easier and more even.

Go buy L'Oreal eyeshadow in the gold case, color raven. It is less than $4. It can make you look goth, if you use layers, which is cool. Or to have smoky eyes, carefully put it on with a wet q-tip along the top of your lashes like eyeliner, then use the sponge thing to sweep it on your eyelid and darken in the outside edge a bit at the crease.

i depends on your eye color, shape, feuatures, ect. so go to a department store and if you are looking for more bold colors try the mac section but if you are looking for more natural colors try bobbi brown or nars then ask if they cold help you find shadows, liners, and masscara that would work for you, also tell them that you want a smoky eye this doesnt always need to be black but darker hues like plum, navy, or brown
but.....
if you dont want to pay the hefty price for desinger makeup go to the drugstore and look for simialar colors that the professinools use
hope this helps

I say go to a M.A.C COUNTER pay for eye lashes and they will do eye makeup for free. Then watch and ask questions they will show you as they work. Most mac artists are sweeties... its worth it for 10 bucks.
