The earth is slightly tilted on its axis. As the sun shines on the earth, it shines more directly on the northern hemisphere in June, and more directly on the southern hemisphere in December. That's why the seasons are different in each hemisphere. In the spring and fall, the sun shines fairly straight on the equator, giving both hemispheres equal warming.
The Earth's orbit is in the shape of an ellipse, so that sometimes the Earth is a little bit closer to the Sun than at other times. Is this the cause of the seasons?
You can imagine that if the seasons were caused by the Earth's orbit, people in the northern hemisphere and people in the southern hemisphere would have the same seasons. For example, if winter occured because the Earth was far away from the Sun, everyplace on the Earth would be cold at the same time.
But this is not what happens! Summer in the northern hemisphere occurs at the same time as winter in the south, and vice-versa. It turns out that the Earth's orbit is nearly perfectly circular, and the difference between its closest point and its furthest point is very small. In fact, the Earth is furthest away from the Sun in June when it is summer in the northern hemisphere.
The Earth is a very special planet in many ways. Just as Earth's unique atmosphere and its distance from the Sun work together to make Earth the right temperature to support life, Earth's orbit and its rotation work together to create the seasons.
Now US is in North Hemisphere, & Australia is in Southern. This Gives your reqd. answer.

Oh vhashie...vhashie...
You are the reason I love teaching Geography.
Yes--Australia is now experiencing late winter. They are experiencing weather more typical to our Februarys in the Northern Hemisphere. However, since their climate types are drier and hotter than ours naturally, as a rule, really it's more like February in California, as opposed to, say, Minnesota.
This all happens because, with the tilt of the earth and revolution around the sun, it so happens that different parts of the earth see more sun at some times of the year than others (putting them in summer then). The tilt is based on where the north and south poles lie in relation to the sun, therefore, when we say the other side of the world has the opposite season from us, we don't literally mean the exact opposite side of our current location. We just mean the other hemisphere--northern or lower. The closer a place is to the poles, the more extreme the differences.
Uh...going around the world east and west only changes your clock, not your seasons. I'm doing my best here not to have a field day on this, but I'm still dying over here. Vhashie will be glad to know he just made my Geography lecture for the upcoming year when I get to the topic. Don't feel too bad. Everyone seems to struggle with it, actually.

their seasons are opposite each other
winter in Australia, summer in US
summer in Australia, winter in US
spring in Australia, fall in US
fall in Australia, spring in US
this applies to all regions in southern hemisphere - New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, for example
