The concept of pH was developed by S.P.L. Sørensen in 1909. IT comes from Latin meaning "pondus hydrogenii".
In English, pH stands for "hydrogen power", or "power of hydrogen", or "potential of hydrogen".

pH is a measure of the activity of hydrogen ions in a solution, and Hydrogen in the periodic table is "H".

So there's the connection.

The reason for pH has been explained in a couple of the answers above. However there is a reason why you need to be specific when writing it, since Ph means something else completely in chemistry - Ph is the abbreviation for "phenyl", which describes a substituted benzene.

it because it refers to the activity of hydrogen ions in a solution and stands for hydrogen power. Since in chemistry all elements start with a captial letter, the H is a capital, "power" is not an element and should not have be a capital.

its written backwards pH, not Hp, because it comes from the french pouvoir hydrogène

p (small) in chemistry is used widely. It means

The "H" of pH is the symbol of the hydrogen atom, which needs to be writen in capital letter.

Because the lowercase p means the
-log (something)... pH means -log (H) the H is the Hydronium ion concentration.....Or pOH means -log (OH) the OH is the hydroxide ion concentration.
