I swear a lot but sometimes some ignorant git challenges me and tries to pursuade me that I am a naughty little boy and that I must grow up and become a stuffed shirt like everyone else.
I always say that it is very important to me to communicate well and that I will use swearwords if I feel that this adds value to my communication.
I say that people who are more interested in the detail of my style than they are in the substance of my communication are getting their priorities badly wrong.
I always ask Puritans why they have a probem but I've never had a valid answer. All answers given basically boil down to hust one thing and that is, "My parents told me that swearing was wrong and they punshed me every time that I swore so therefore swearing must be wrong be cause mummy and daddy said so and because they wouldn't have punished me for no reason".

Does anyone have a better answer? I would like an answer that is preferably one that is more grounded in the present.

Because if you do it in the wrong place, you can be put it jail for it. If you swear around children, this can and does happen in certain places. I suggest you get the book "Verbal Judo" so you can have better comebacks to the plebians other than swearing. Good luck!

Because it's associated with ignorance and crudity therefore pointing to lack of good breeding or upbringing.

There are people who believe learning to express one's anger, frustration etc. should be done in a manner without swearing, thus teaching you self control and coping skills.

Swearing is equated to lack of self-control or the inability to cope, therefore appearing to be an undesirable quality.

In a professional world or world (school for example) where such etiquettes are trying to be taught and instilled it's frowned on and therefore you are taught to try and learn other ways to express your frustrations and anger rather than vulgar crude words.

Let's face it, it's a very unnattractive quality to say the least...and even those who let the occasional word come out would frown on someone whose mouth pours out trash consistently without regard to whom might be within earshot.

I swear... although there are some words I don't use cos I don't like them. I don't mind other people swearing but too much makes them (and me) sound ignorant... like they/I have a poor vocabulary and I don't like to sound stupid so I keep my swearing to a minimum
