What to do If you have been called out of the blue.
and they say they are from BT or some other phone company etc etc and you are with BT or one of the companys and they commence to ask you questions about how much you spend per quarter etc. The answer is If you are from whom you say you are you would already know. then ask them from what company they are calling from. make a note.
If it is anybody you do not use do the same.
Then tell them that the call to you is an unsolicted sales call and you intend to report them because it is illegal to make an unsolicited call.
If you want to stop receiving these calls go to the Telephone Preference service site and register. You can also stop them on you mobile
http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
Under section 9 of the data protection act it is illegal to ask for your birth date. Because with your birt date and your national insurance number together your identity can be stolen or misused.
When your birth date is asked for as a security measure you can refuse to give it and you can ask for them to use another security question. If you are in a situation where you cannot join or receive a service without your birth date, you are quite within your rights to give a different day or month and stay wiyh that as a security code it is not illegal!!!! on your side because they are not allowed to ask. They are the ones who are breaking the law.

Depends,
If it has anything to do with double glazing, doors etc, I say the house I'm in is rented and therefore they are wasting there time.
If it's cell phones and contracts, I say all my communication costs are covered by my employer so they are wasting there time.
Anything else I put the phone quietly down and come back a few minutes later to hear the dial tone.

If you are receiving unsolicited calls then just put the phone down on them.
In the past, I have allowed them to continue their spiel after all its them who is paying for the call. If asked for personal details I do a "Manuel" from Fawlty Towers, or similar, pretending that I don`t understand what is being asked.

Sign up online to the telephone preference service - it has cut the calls to almost zero.
When they do come through, I say "I'll just get him for you..." and then leave the phone for a good ten minutes. Let it cost them.

Say to them 'just hang on a minute so I can get a pen'.... and never go back... I used to work in a call centre and they are monitored by how long their call lasts.

There is a free service called Telephone preference service (listed in phone book). This blocks your number from call centres, Therefore they wont call again.
Good luck.

I don't have a land line any more, just a cell phone, so I don't get these calls any more.
When I did get them, I would act like they called a phone sex operator. "Oh yeah, baby, tell Daddy all about it. Mmmm, sounds sexy. Keep talking, honey, while I unbutton your shirt. Ooohhhh yeah..." Leaves them flustered and speechless every time!

I work in a call centre so I usually laugh with my colleagues about the idiots I've spoken to that day around the water cooler.

Simply tell them you are willing to call them back in a while and ask for their personal home phone number.
Or try this...say it verbatum...
"I'm lost, do you know where my mommy is?...oh, and one other thing...CLICK (sound of your phone hanging up on the telemarketer)
