10u=7=8(2u-4)-9
10u+7=16u-32-9
How do I get rid of the 32-9?
Do i just get
10u+7=16u-23 and move on?
or what do i do?

Please help..

10u + 7 = 8(2u - 4) - 9
10u + 7 = 16u - 32 - 9
32 + 9 + 7 = 16u - 10u
48 = 6u
48 / 6 = u
8 = u
u = 8

No. Sorry, the first time I answered I didn't read the problem carefully. You absolutely would not get 10u+7=16u-23. What you would get is 10u+7=16u-41. The reason is that subtraction, like everything else, is done from left to right, thus for instance 10-5-3=2, not 8. If you want to combine those numbers, you have to add them - the reason for this is that a-b=a+(-b). Thus, 16u-32-9=16u+(-32)+(-9), which I hope youcan see is 16u+(-41). In fact, it will probably help you a great deal if in future problems you immediately translate all subtraction into addition of negative numbers in your mind. From there you would get:

10u+7=16u-41
subtract 7:
10u=16u-48
Subtract 16:
-6u=-48
Divide by -6
u=8

For those answering after me:

Okay, I can understand not reading the question carefully the first time, since I screwed up on that too. But given that three of the previous answerers have already told you that you're wrong, and why you're wrong, why don't you think to check your answers? u≠5. Consider that if it did, we'd have 10(5)+7=8(2(5)-4)-9 → 57=8(6)-9 → 57=48-9 → 57=39, which is FALSE. u=8 works though, since 10(8)+7=8(2(8)-4)-9 → 87=8(12)-9 →87=96-9 → 87=87. I cannot believe that people are so careless with their math.

these are tough! Your doing very well!
You need to remember to combind all like terms. So any numbers that do not have variables you can comebind across the equivilent sign!
10u+7=16u-32-9
-32-9= 23
10u+7=16u + 23
-7 -7
10u=16u +16
good luck from there!

10u+7=8(2u-4)-9
10u=8(2u-4)-16 (take 7 from both sides)
10u=16u-16-16 (solve brackets)
10u=16u-32
10u+32=16u (add 32 to both sides)
32=16u-10u (take 10u from both sides)
32=6u (16u-10u)
5 1/3=u (divide both sides by 6)

(added later) Oops! I'm wrong, to whom it may confide is right! Consider;
10u+7=8(2u-4)-9
10(8)+7=8((8)-4)-9
80+7=8(16-4)-9
87=8(12)-9
87=96-9
I was SO wrong.

Your goal is to get all the u's on one side and all your numbers on the other.

Think of it this way, you can simply move the numbers through the equals sign, but when you do you reverse the sign. So, we begin by subtracting out your 32-9 which is 23, so now we have.
10u+7=16u-23
we move 23 to the left of the equals sign and 10u to the right, (you can go either way, but the other will give you negative signs), and we have.
23+7=16u-10u
notice I flipped the signs, now we just simplify to
30=6u
divide both sides by 6 to get rid of all the numbers...
30/6=6u/6
and we get
u=5

Yes.. you are correct...

at that point in the equation, you need to simplify it so you have one variable and one "value" on each side of the equation. You do that through basic math, in this case, subtraction, just like you guessed at.

The 10u+7 = 16u-23 is correct... the next step in simplifying the equation would be to get the variables on one side, and the values on the other. I would subtract 10u from each side, and add 23 to each side, making the equation:
30 = 6u... if you like, you can transpose the equation to make it 6u = 30... then get rid of the 6u to make it (1) u = 5

Yes
10u + 7 = 16u - 23

And than you move on
7 + 23 = 16u - 10u
30 = 6u
u = 30/ 6 = 5

Divide both sides by skill of four to get 3(4x - 8) = 12x + 9 12x - 24 = 12x + 9 Subtracting 12x from both sides elements -24 = 9. it rather is by no skill actually, inspite of fee of x you take advantage of. So the answer is that there is not any answer.

10u+7=8(2u-9)-9
10u+7=16u-72-9
10u+7=16u-81
10u+16u=7-81
26u=-74

thats it

yeah your right
10u+7=16u-23
7=16u-10u-23
7=6u-23
7+23=6u
30=6u
30/6=u
u=5
