E-coli is the number 1 cause of UTI in females. It is usually caused by improper wiping (remember girls, wipe front to back) Ecoli is a part of the colon's normal flora (bacteria). Theres different types of ecoli, some you get from food (and leads to food poisioning) theres the type that normally live in your colon to help break down food, theres types that live in the water (hence why they treat water with chemicals to kill bacteria before we drink it) The most common way for a girl to get a UTI is by not wiping front to back. It does not mean that a person is dirty or anything else, its just a normal bacteria. A girl can also be infected if she has sex and the mans private parts touch her anus and then touch her around the urethra (the pee-hole). One way to prevent this contamination is for the girl to pee after having sex (it flushes out the urethra and helps to prevent the bacteria from climbing up and causing the infection) Drink plenty of fluids, wear cotton undergarments, pee directly after having sex, wipe front to back (if you just pee or after a poo)
It is possible to just have a bladder infection, and it is possible that if the bladder infection is not treated promptly, for the bacteria to travel to the kidneys causing pyelonephritis (kidney infection). Antibiotics such as Cipro can clear up the infection.
Signs of a UTI are pain/burning on urination, frequency (always going), belly pain over the bladder area, peeing only small amounts when you do go, low back pain, cloudy foul smelling urine, bloody urine, and for men, pain during intercourse and climax. If you develop nausea, fever, or chills, it may be a sign of a more serious infection, and you should call your doctor immediately.
With any of these symptoms, you should call a doctor. As I said before, a simple bladder infection can lead to a kidney infection. The more extensive the infection, the more pain you will have, and the longer the treatment to clear the infection must be.

It's "tract" not "track".
Infections are caused by bacteria, and women have short urethras, so it's not a long journey for the germs to get in there and into the bladder.
The area around the opening to the urethra is full of bacteria.
Some women get UTI's more frequently due to their anatomy.

Many women get UTI's after sex. It is a great idea to pee after sex to help clean out any bacteria that might have found its way down the urethra. Regularly drinking plenty of clean water is a great idea too. I also suggest keeping pure organic cranberry juice (no sugar) on hand as well as cranberry supplements which can be found in a health food store. Take both of these at the first sign of UTI coming on. The cranberry will not allow bacteria to adhere to the bladder or urethra. All that water you will be drinking anyway will flush it out.

women get urinary tract infections from many things. Not drinking enough water, wearing constrictive clothing, holding their urine. They may get it after intercourse if bacteria enters the urethra.

it's common. she needs to see a physician and get antibiotics. If it keeps going, her kidneys could be hurt as it could move up the tracts to the kidsneys and then it would get worse. see a doctor soon.
