When I had gotten to all 50 states, I was returning to Alaska the most often. There are sights all around - huge river valleys, 14,000-foot glaciated volcanos, tidewater glaciers - that in any other state, they'd draw a box around and make it a nation park. Up here, it is just more of the scenery.
And the critters are as spectacular as anywhere - like Yellowstone NP, but they are more wild. Driving my son to school, we will likely see a few moose, maybe a caribou and of course bald eagles.
So, yes , it as beautiful as it looks on TV, but it is also HUGE, over twice the size of Texas, so don't think that you get temperate rain forests AND 20,000-foot peaks AND our 3,000,000 lakes AND caribou on the tundra AND very productive salmon streams AND glaciers AND our only city of any size all in the same place. You have to pick two or three of those to have out your window.
People who move here should love the scenery and/or outdoors activities year round (or commute south for the winter). They will find people to be more helpful and friendly and for dem/rep, rich/poor, oilmen/tree huggers to get along better while disagreeing than in any place I've been. Some of it is a small town / small state thing and part of it is "we puny humans against the big outdoors and cold winters". Everyone drives around with emergency supplies in their trunk but the second or fourth car along would stop to help if you needed it.
If you get outside city limits, land can be very cheap and they would be no building code so you build whatever/however you want. (Which can be both a good and a bad thing.) I've got a friend who literally lives in a treehouse.
Also, you should have a plan for a job. The pipeline boom was over almost 30 years ago. But anyone skilled in their profession/job will likely be in demand. No particular skills? You run the risk of flipping burgers or changing sheets in Anchorage. Ideally, land a job in advance and ask for moving expenses.

I am like alot on here. I have not been to Alaska yet but I sure will love to get there some day! I have watched it on T.V., read about it, heard from people there and have just listened all about it my life. I just see Alaska as the Last Beautiful place we have in this Country!! The weather up there is really bad for people who like it warm but it is what saves that land! If you are one who does like wide open, quite, peaceful and natural beauty, Alaska would be great for you to see or live at if you can take the weather. I just hope the Oil People do not destroy this last Beautiful Place we have left. Sure, down in the 48 we have Beautiful Places left but the Population does take away each year!

i imagine l. a. has a tendency to get over hyped somewhat. there are particular parts that are particularly cool and particular parts that are only ok. To stay in l. a. may be somewhat disappointing. it would want to also be a enable right down to visit lengthy time period. yet Southern California often is staggering and being purely 4 hours from Vegas has its advantages. I genuinely were residing in l. a. for 7 months now and that i have only been disillusioned. the elements is staggering in spite of the reality that and that i did get to exhibit screen some stay tapings of exhibits. l. a. does have its percentage of risky parts even if it truly is not as risky because it receives equipped as a lot as be. genuinely the crime fee has been its lowest in many years. also have a really user-friendly time finding english speaker too lol. there is a large number of mexicans yet you particularly ought to seek for them and intensely a lot of them talk english ok lol. If climate is something you're questioning about... I genuinely have purely seen rains 3 circumstances considering shifting out right here in April and 60 (15) stages is chilly.

Yes, Alaska is a gorgeous as all the pictures.
Who should move there? Consider months of darkness, freezing winters, and lots of snow.
But the bonus is ten guys to every girl! I have threatened to move to Alaska on many occaisions!

I have not been to Alaska but friends who have been there assure me it is totally beautiful. One problem is it has terrible mosquitos and lots of them. Another is the long, cold winters. I met a guy from Fairbanks who said he actually liked the long, cold winters, and a guy from Anchorage who said Portland seemed comparatively tropical. So people who do not mind, or actually like cold weather would be the best candidates to move there.

I lived there for 3 years. Yes it is beautiful. Personally I would not want to live there at my age. 53. The driving on snow and ice would make me too nervous. It gets too cold for me. But if you are adventurous and don't mind cold and ice then go for it. It is a wonderful place to be if you are younger. There is so much to do. We skied and ice skated and went sledding almost daily. In the summer it was warm enough to swim in the lakes (chilly but tolerable) and there were indoor pools. Hiking was great. The old timers there now are used to it. I'll stick with Georgia thank you. m

Yes it is..and only those who can handle 12hr days and nights. Those who have a love for their environment. Those who don't mind cold winters and mild summers. Those who can handle a more rugged terrain.
Those who actually LIKE being paid to live in a state that doesn't charge sales tax!!
