Radon is only poisonous in large amounts, its a natural gas found in any enclosed space that covers open earth (such as a basement). It has to build up for long periods of time, but in some cases a house is unknowingly built one a location that vents an unnatural amount into the air. It builds up too quickly and cannot be released from the building without special equipment.

Call a local realtor and ask for a good company to come test for you.

i do believe you can buy detectors, although i dont remember where i saw them. Check with home depot or something like that, if you cant find anything there go ahead and contact a realtor for a company, iam sure they can point you in the right direction.
