Why do Americans put up with the damn gas prices? What would happen, if we all cut down on our consumption, by just 10 or even 20%? For one thing, it would allow you to save money. But 1st and foremost, it would decrease the record setting profits, that the oil companies are making!! Remember the 70s? They claimed a shortage then, and we learned it was a big farce, so they could raise prices. It was also a way for the govt. to be able to force the automakers to start making more compact cars. It's no different than a local grocer, whose supplier raises prices on a loaf of bread, because he's the only store in town. Yet, when ppl started baking their own, he couldn't sell as much, and the supplier lost money, when he all but cancelled his orders. They had to make a new contract, to appease the store owner, and lowered the prices back down to previous levels, and ppl started buying again!! If we all applied the same principle to gas purchases, it would bring gas prices back down!!

You are right. If it was possible for us to cut back on consumption, then the demand would go down and the prices would follow.

I have cut my driving down to the bare minimums. Basically I drive to work and home and try to make all of my stops on my to and from. I've switch my shopping habits and have started using stores along my route in order to save the mileage. Unfortunately, I'm still driving 400 miles a week. The next step would be to move closer to work, which is viable, but much more expensive to live in that town than where I live.

I agree 100%-We are car pooling at this time and will keep doing so until prices go down-We only put gas in our car when absolutely necessary and still try to carpool when grocery shopping, running errands, etc. I urge others to do the same. Only buy gas one day a week or less if possible!! Carpool!

People need gas to get to work, they have no choice but to pay for it
The prices will never go down. And, if car companies start making more compact cars how can anyone afford it with how expensive the cost of living is in this country?

It would nice but this example does not really relate to the gas issue-- people can't make their own gas. Most people have to drive to work and so forth because they don't have adequate access to public transportation. Just be thankful that gas is only about 3 dollars per gallon in the USA because here in Sweden it is about 6.50-7.00 dollars per gallon. I had to laugh when I visited family in the USA last summer and thought to myself that the 2.80 per gallon price of gas was so cheap!

what we really need to do over time is for everyone to start driving hybrid cars that can run on such substances as corn oil, used vegetable oil, and yes--even water. not only would this be a million times cheaper than gas, but it would also be very beneficial to the earth and help stop the greenhouse effects that really can't be denied anymore.

th reason i refuse to cut back is - we would be doing just what this goverment wants us to do - go to work pay taxes and go home and be good little boys and girls - the heck with that im going cruising.
