voice connections require a traditional modem to accomplish that (and a regular phone line connected to your computer's modem.)

your computer right now is probably connected by a network card to your dsl modem. the dsl modem can't dial out like a traditional analog modem can (or like a regular phone would).

if you dont have telephone cable connected to your computer's modem, it cant dial out.
