I've been using a computer for 20 years and have never got beyond using one finger for 3/4 of the right side of the keyboard and one finger to cover the remaining 1/4 of the left. I use my right thumb to hit the space bar. I can get up a reasonable speed and can type accurately up to 40 words a minute. If you are aiming for 80 words a minute then you will need to use all your fingers. Using 3 or less is perfectly adequate for normal data input.

Yes it would help you in the long run. You can find online typing exercises which will help you. It's tedious but really worth it. It will make you faster and more efficient.

However, some people type two-fingered so I guess what really works for you. I was taught touch-typing in the '80s when no one had heard of the internet and computers were something you'd see in sci-fi films (Ok I'm exaggerating here but you get my drift about why I had to learn touch-typing!).

Get the "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" software - works on Mac or PC and it worked for me! Its actually quite well known, is kind of fun, and best of all... it works! I was a pretty good typist before I tried it and I am an even better typist now because of it.

The only way to get maximum speed on the keyboard is to use left hand on left of keyboard and right on the right. I know it all sounds boring using the correct fingers, but in the end it will pay off.

I taught myself to type by getting one of those cheap cd rom teach yourself typing cd's - gives you exercises to do. A bit twice a day and you will be typing very quickly. Well worth the mission.

Learning to touch-type will make any kind of computer operations easier, and also make it possible for you to do some of the few remaining jobs where using a typewriter is a requirement.

I learned to type (and type fast) by going on AOL chatrooms back in the day. 46wpm from typing total carp to people!

You can get typing teacher programs, it'll familiarise you with the keyboard and will help you in finger positioning.

Try typing without looking at the keyboard, you should soon get used to where all the keys are.

Good luck!
