May be not by the farmers themselves, but they are man-made.
One recent crop circle that was in the news recently is the one made by a group of Firefox fans. The procedures can be read on this page ( http://lug.oregonstate.edu/index.php/Projects/Firefox/Firefox_Circle ) and after reading we can see that a crop circle can be made with proper equipment and organisation.

Farmer on a tractor, going round and round and round!! There are some made by aliens and their spacecraft but no one can say 100% certain, when people have tried to get a photo for proof the picture always come out blank, probably distorted by the anti camera forcefield. Thats what i believe anyway.

Yes some of them are made by farm tools, othere by people at night, and some as attractions, the aliens do the rest

As the crop gets damaged, I think not. They aren't made by aliens, either!

I think some are for attention. I think some are weather related, and gee can we be the only people in great big universe. Aliens with sense of humor having fun with ignorant humans is one possibility. ha ha :-)
