yeah, they can be ok. but most of them dont have a clue what they are looking for. they just have to tick a box and then pass you on to the next stage. try reed.co.uk its a great site with loads of jobs. i bet you will find something on there

Agencies do two things 1) specialise in only a few areas (yet never tell you that when you register), 2) look after number on at all times. My local agency was crying out for new people to register, so i did. With 17+ years experience in sales/management/training they said they would have no end of positions for me. I called back a fortnight later as i'd heard nothing. They had no record of me; told me the same story all over again and asked if i'd like to register. The weird thing is, they seem to go through more staff than any employer i've ever worked for. Are they taking the best jobs for themselves - i wonder?

I signed up with a few, told them exactly what I wanted but most of them hardly contacted me about suitable positions. The one that did only offered me a week here & there, so if you're happy to do the odd week or so, then I'd say it's ok. But if you're looking for something more long term, then I'm not sure. For me anyway, all the agency did was ring me up and ask if I was interested in a job, then they just forwarded my CV to the employer. I never heard anything from these jobs. It has worked for many people though, so it depends. Also, I've been told by a career advisor that we should contact them daily to see what is available! But I couldn't be bothered with that which is why maybe I didn't get very far with some of the others.

Listen those agencies suck. What they do is make you go over to their office fill papers for 45 minutes, then take a 1 hour test. They will tell you have they have so many positions in this and that but when you ask for an interview with a company they'll give you 100 excuses. In reality what they want is having a large resume bank. That way when selling to potential clients they can show "look we have 900 professionals looking for employment".
If you want to waste your time go ahead.
Usually unless it is labor...they are not going to help much.

I think you are getting a mixed bag of answers because it isn't clear if you are looking at temp agencies or headhunter-type agencies.
I had several interesting jobs through temp agencies and found the job that I loved through one placement. The workplace has to pay a fee to "get" you or let a period of time elapse before you become a free agent. That job lasted thirteen years, I became a manager and I loved it.

I have been through an agency before - they found me a great job and were really helpful too. You should try it - register with a few and see what they come up with. There are loads of specialist agencies too - so you can join one that finds the work you are skilled for.

There are lots of good agencies around, I worked through one for a couple of years and found them to be highly professional, and once registered, lots of jobs were offered. I went paye through the agency, they do take a percentage of your earnings, but you would have to pay an accountant anyway. Best of luck.
