With the advent of Cruise ships able to carry passengers and crew totalling in excess of 5,000 people, seems an easy target.Excepting the fact that an explosion on a modern day ship could be well contained with its increasing compartement structure. But even that would not prevent an air attack.

If they were smart, Yes... For some reason they have a hard on for airplanes. Which is dumb, considering there are easier targets like ships or trains. Actually in 1985 in the Med there was the famous terrorist attack on a the cruise ship Achille Lauro. A Amercian passenger in a wheel chair was murdered. Also Piracy in general is on the rise. Last year a cruise ship off Somolia was attacked by pirates with Ak's & RPG's.
Cruise ships are big, but easy targets. the crew are unarmed. foreign, & in any emergency typicaly useless. In a case about 15 years ago a crew abandoned ship off South Africa and left the PASENGERS! ! Cruise ships travel alone and port security is lax in most cruise ports. Terrorists could easily sign on as crew members or passengers and smuggle weapons on board. IF you want to be more adventurous? Underwater attacks!! Scuba divers swimming in to a harbor and attaching explosive mines to the hull. Been done in wartime by the USN, RN & Italians on targets. Last option is a suicide boat attack, like the USS Cole. Fill a small speed boat full of explosives and ram a ship. Crude, yet simple to do. So as I said if they were smart..........

Not as spectacular as a plane disaster at all. Nothing will ever match what happened on september the 11th. So the answer is yes the may well try to do a cruise ship but the loss of life will be minimal because like you say a ship has hundreds of compartments and safety holds, also a ship has life boats/life jackets which could save most people on board the boat.

But back to my original point, these sick terrorist basically love spectacular disasters and so planes really are their favourite form of chaos. Also airways are the most used mode of travel in the 21st century and so disaster causing the desired chaos and disruption echoed through the western world. (as seen lately)

(personally i'd like to see us travel the waves again, much safer in my opinion, despite the fact air travel is stastically the safest form of travel with the least amount of deaths/1000 people travelled)

Anythings possible with these motherfcukers, the talibannies as I call them will strike anywhere where they can take out big numbers of the infidel. I just wish the powers at be would stop being so wishy washy about these baxtards and take some REAL action to stop and prevent these attacks from happening. I know they have foiled a few but I think they came about by chance rather than being on top of the perpretrators.

Someone mentioned terrorists targeting football games.

Anyone read 'Incendiary' by Christopher Cleave. It was due to be launched around 07/07/05, but was slightly delayed I think for obvious reasons. The book is written from the point of view of a grieving mother - terrorists have blown up Arsenals new stadium on the 1st day of the season, with her husband and son inside. It's poignant, humourous, heart-breaking, and a damn good read.

The first chapter is at the link below, so you can try before you buy!

actually that has already got here about. in case you appeared up the "MS Achille Lauro" you'll study a 1985 Hijacking the position terrorist ended up killing an American Citizen. It grow to be no longer an American organization, it grow to be owned by technique of an eu organization and hijacked off of Egypt. As to how in all probability it may be to happen back. properly in case you consider the form of cruises that happen each day and what it would want to take for this. the probabilities that it would want to happen is going to be narrow. yet in case you bypass to places that are literally not as "good" which includes Turkey, it really is only a "Stones Throw" faraway from places which includes Egypt, Israel, and Syria..in case you've slightly more effective of a probability of something occurring. inspite of the undeniable fact that the percentages are nevertheless likely adversarial to it, so I likely doesn't project about it.

No because the loss of life to these terrorist is just a bonus - they are really after causing ongoing grief that would damage the economy, make people live in fear and make life difficult. Although an attack on a cruise ship would be terrible indeed, it would not have the same impact as their current efforts.

I dont think so coz the Al Queda is using the planes to strike at major institutions, buildings like the Pentagon,WTC which is not possible with a cruise ship.

Oh darn, I thought you meant a ship with Tom Cruise on it. I support bombing a ship like that. As for your question, I do not think that there is anything is not on the terrorists list.

better not give them ideas.. but yes i suppose they could be, i dont know if they scan your luggage when you take it in but they should. but enjoy your holiday if u are thinking about going on one, there are alot worse things that can happen on a cruise ship! but remeber terrorists dont have planes, not the al queda (however you spell it) anyway they cant strike from the air.

theres no point targeting sea going vessels. they cant go fast enough to crash into major towns, and the local miltary would order a strike force to blow the ship up. especially america they would think nothing of sending a squadron to blow the ship up regardless of the lives on board
