They are both part of the same thing. Butterfly refers to what you do with your arms -- they come out over the water like a butterfly's wings. Dolphin refers to what you do with your legs. Unlike the flutter kick (alternate leg kick) used in crawl stroke, or the 'frog kick' once used in breast stroke, when you do a dolphin kick, the legs are pressed together and operate as a unit, so you have one flowing propulsion movement going on, similar to what a dolphin does. When the two are combined, you have one of the fastest swim styles ever developed.
Interestingly enough, freestyle used to mean front crawl, because it was the fastest of the strokes. But since the fly was developed, you are beginning to see freestyle racers when flyers are pitting themselves against the front crawl swimmers, and winning!

well actually in the butterfly stroke you do use a dolphin kick. the butterfly is where you are using a dolphin kick and on the up kick that brings you out of the water you lift your arms up and out to the side bringing them up towards your head. almost like a butterfly flapping its wings and then you go back into the water till the next up kick. it takes a while to learn it. the dolphin kick you can do all on your own. it just involves. you swimming like a dolphin. with your legs and feet together doing an up and down sort of kick.

the dolphin kick is used in the butterfly stroke. the dolphin kick is when you move your body like a worm. when you swim butterfly, you use both arms, pull back, and then kick with the dolphin kick all at the same time. if you need help with swimming, you can take lessons at a local ymca if you need to and also you can purchase dvds that show you how to use correct strokes so you don't hurt yourself.
