it's free. why would anyone pay for antivirus software when you could get it for free by using something like AVG free edition? does anyone know anything about these two because i'm confused and my 'friend' uninstalled nortons and now i have AVG instead. did she do the right thing?

Your friend did a very wise thing by uninstalling that memory hog. However, as much as I like AVG, the freebie "Avast" anti- virus is actually better. Avast rated higher then Norton in May 2006 but lower in February. AVG tied Norton in May, but lost to it in Feb. I've seen other test where Avast generally rates a little higher than Norton.
Why would anyone pay for antivirus?
There is actually a simple answer for that. That is because the majority of people are simply ignorant of what's out there. For example: why would anybody pay for Windows when they can use Linux for free? Why does everybody keep using Internet Explorer when there is better, safer more modern browsers out there? To be frank - Its just plain ignorance or hard headiness.

I am actually running them both. Norton AV 2006 and AVG. The thing that irks me about the free edition of AVG (http://www.grisoft.com) is that the automatic scheduling is DAILY or you have to shut it off. I don't need my computers scanned daily...I don't download or connect to the Internet on 3 of my 4 computers...so I just shut off the scheduler.

Norton is very good...but it costs like US $40.00. The weird thing is AVG will catch some virii that Norton did not catch and sometimes Norton will catch something that AVG didn't catch.

I've used AVG as a secondary and primary anti-virus for at least 3-4 years and it is a good, solid product that offers good virus protection...for free. 9/10 Stars

I've used Norton/Symantec AV products for 9-10 years (wow) ...9/10 stars.

Good luck.

Your friend did the right thing!

I've used AVG (Free Version) for circa 5 years on my home machine and have found it to be excellent. I use Norton on my business machines as I don't want the "AVG FREE" postscript added to my business e-mails, but in my opinion AVG is a better utility for a home user.

the only earnings is going into Norton or McAfee's wallet. all and sundry is brought about have confidence that if something is well worth something you will desire to pay for it. Norton and McAfee are the two device HOGS and can unquestionably decelerate or stop your computer from doing something valid. they are cumbersome, over bloated utility. i exploit Avast and function on no account had a unmarried subject and it has saved my Beaverbrook some situations now. It updates many times, on occasion countless situations an afternoon, which tells me that the builders do care approximately my protection and are on good of the latest threats.... for unfastened.

I have used both Norton and AVG. I find them both to be about equal. But free is good!

yes, AVG is alot better then norton. norton can't detect balls these days.

you could always give it the best test drive.. but try at your own risk..

go to website that have virus. and stuff.. use norton to scan first.. and then use avg to scan you will notice AVG will pick up alot more virus then norton ghetto anti virus.

I use AVG myself, and I'm a network security student. The reason people pay for anti-virus is because the big companies are in stores, where most people would look, and they are installed on most computers from the large manufacturers.

I dumped AVG with some difficulty (it's hard to remove) and went to the free home version of Avast. It's so much better I would never go back.
