The term universe has a variety of meanings based on the context in which it is described. As others have said, on the physical plane, it is the sum total of all physical matter/anti-matter. What that sum total means, on a more metaphysical plane, we may never know in this lifetime--or if someone knew the objective answer to that, they'd be the new messiah or Einstein. You might as well ask: What is the meaning of a fly? Of time? The best answer may be that there is no answer: that the meaning is subjective, (depending on what religion you believe in, do you believe in a god or are you atheist) that the meaning of the universe is whatever each person perceives it to be. Or, perhaps, simply that nothing is permanent: everything changes...our sun will die, we will die, the universe itself is forever changing.
