The three second rule is a myth and should be ignored. It also appears as the 5, 7 and 10 second rule. Quite where it came from nobody seems to know but it certainly didn't come from a reputable source
The idea being that if food is dropped on the floor and picked up within 3 seconds then it's safe to eat.
If food is dropped, then as soon as it makes contact with the floor, whatever germs, bacteria and other things are lurking down there will adhere to the food.
A bit of bacteria is actually good for a person, too much cleanliness and lack of exposure to bacteria weakens the body's natural defense mechanisms making a person more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
If you think about it... babies and toddlers put all sorts of nasty things in their mouths and very rarely does this harm them. By the time we've grown up we've learned to be hygienic and have also weakened our immune system, if adults put in their mouths what babies do then they'd be lucky not to go down with some illness or other.

It's OK
Americans have a squeamish factor when it comes to food. And if we ever knew what goes on in restaurant kitchens and the food factories, -we'd never eat again.
But for food dropped on the floor?? It's rather schizophrenic to 'hate' that and then turn a blind eye as to how others prepare our food.
BTW: the new mantra is that being exposed to germs, earlier and often, may make the body strong and capable. That mantra is really related to allergies, and asthma, -but same difference.

It depends on the food. If I dropped a piece of peanut butter and jelly toast face down on the floor, I definitely would not eat it - even after one second. An M&M on the floor - yes (even if it was found under the couch after the cat played with it).

Only in my own house, because I clean the floors, and know of the cleanliness. And only then if I can beat the dog to it.
It also depends on the food. Sticky foods get eaten by the dog.

I thought it was a 5 second rule but Yes I do follow it. It can't be any worse than what they actually put in the food.

We do 5 seconds and we do it from the time you see the food (bot when you drop it). If you have to think about it for more than 5 seconds, it probably needs to get tossed. My kids especially like it when they find a week old gummy bear.

Depending on what it is, I might just remove the part which was in contact with the floor an go on. In that case the rule would apply.

the "3 second rule" is a joke. It's not real. Having said that, eating a couple of extra germs with your food won't necessarily hurt you, but it is gross.

Once it is on the floor, its out of the question for me. Especially since I have a dog at home, once it touches the floor it's covered in dog hair.
