calling all s'porean teachers!
i have been thinking about joining the teaching force since i was in secondary school. i have always enjoyed teaching/tutoring my friends as i grew up and i love the moment when the finally understand something and think to themselves, 'wow. thats kinda interesting'.
but what i'd like to know is what kind of salary does a teacher get how much does a secondary/jc teacher get? how does pay increment work?
also i want to know from a teacher's point of view if it is all worth it at the end of day? do you enjoy what youre doing and is it everything you though it would be.
i welcome honest answers. be as truthful as you can, dont water it down!

thanks guys.

Why you must find out the pay, if you have the passion of teaching ? I'll am sure, teacher's pay in Singapore is consider not bad because it is use to revise quite frequently. Please, put your passion before the pay that is what a true teacher.

Hi I did part time before and have aplenty of friends doing teaching with MOE. Sec / JC ranges from $4k - $8 depending on their responsibility, performance and qualifications.

Seriously, singapore teaching has gone down singapore river as now teachers have to multi-task by taking up CCAs, remedial lessons, training sessions, volunteer work and do events like racial harmony day, sports day parents day, etc. So you must be prepared to become an events organiser as well.

Kids are also harder to handle with more attitude problems and parents with a similar bad attitude. I got kids telling me his parents pay me, so he is the customer and the customer is always right and he will get away with poor attendance, sleeping in class, 0 marks for spelling and 0 homework handed in.

In the end, those with passion are all overwhelmed by the system rigidity, endless responsibilities and traumatic kids.

I rather you teach at a private institution or tertiary level where you have more freedom to express your style, if you want to teach as life's passion, not to escape the economic downturn.

I run my own business now and I teach other people how to run their businesses better. This way, I can make money faster and share my knowledge in a way I would not be penalised by some outdated and illogical systems set by some 'MOE scholars'

Good luck and all the best to you SIR. (suggest you watch Coach Carter for inspiration about teaching and coaching)

I was offered to be a teacher but i rejected.

The pay for secondary and primary school teachers are the same.

If you are a polytechnic diploma holder, apply MOE for a course where you go training for a year and become a primary school teacher.

If you are a dgree holder, you can be a primary or secondary school teacher. JC teachers need to have Masters.

The starting pay $2500 a month which is above average pay in Singapore.

Depending on your type of Degree, subjects will be allocated to you.

Remember, teaching is now not as before. Teachers never get the respect as they used to get. And parents tend to complain alot to the teachers althought he students are at fault.

This job can be stressful and some people quit after2 years of teaching.

You cant choose which class or school you want to teach(they give school near you estate). If you get good classes, good for you. If you get naughty classes, handle them well! Teenagers are now different.

Think properly before being one. Goodluck!
