So far, the best we can do is quantum teleportation, or entanglement-assisted teleportation, which is a technique that transfers the quantum state of a particle to an arbitrarily distant location using a distributed entangled state and the transmission of some classical information. Quantum teleportation does not transport energy or matter, nor does it allow communication of information at superluminal speed.

The reason we can called it teleportation is because at the quantum level, a particle can only be identified by its properties and its quantum state. So if I can "copy" the quantum state of an electron to another electron located somewhere else, then effectively I have "teleported" the electron. Notice here that the original electron hasn't physically move anywhere, and I had to supply another electron physically located at some other place.

If there actually were such a thing as teleportation technology, this would be such a leap forward in terms of transportation of any kind that it would not be released to the general public.

Either they could put things anywhere they wanted to, or they could bring things from anywhere they wanted. (or maybe both.)

What this means is that they could put a bomb anywhere they wanted one, or they could kidnap anybody or steal anything they wanted to. What would happen is, there would be a very short war, and the nation that had teleportation would rule the world.

I heard a group of university students from Australia managed to teleport a small laser beam. I remember seeing it on the news, but it will be many many years before we are able to teleport a person.

You might want to google that one.
I remember reading an article (I think in Scientific American) a few years back where scientists successfully teleported some particles from one side of a room to another.

Er, none.

We have no such technology.

There are experiments on entangled particles transmitting quantum states, but describing this as teleportation is rather stretching reality to gain headlines.

When I was on star trek ,we just said "beam me up scotty ". It usually worked ever time.
