You know, it's really a coincidence---the same thing recently happened to me, too!
Only in my case, I wanted a wireless keyboard. Same thing, though: I cut off the wire, and the damn thing quit working! I went to Best Buy to complain to the salesman about it, and while I was talking to him, he had to take a phone call...and he never came back! So, I'm STILL stuck with a defective wireless keyboard.
Sorry I couldn't answer your Question, but how can I answer if I can't type??
(yes, I made that story up)

A cordless mouse doesn't mean cutting the cord off your existing mouse! You have to purchase a special mouseand normally the software comes with the mouse or instructions on how to install properly.
You don't have any hope in hades to get refund or grounds to sue as it was your actions that ruined your mouse not the store's! All your mouse is good for now is a paperweight!!

Using the keyboard only is more practical and can improve your ability to get things done. The mouse is an over used device that causes a variety of injuries to the hand, wrist, elbow & shoulder...This is called repetitive stress injury.
Use the keyboard for a while and see what it is like to be blind!...or are you too chicken...you will see that most people who put data on the net refuse to consider the rights of people with disabilities....you will find that you will not be able to navigate pages successfully.
LOL...try walking in someone else's shoes for a while....bet you can't or are too afraid!

You cut off the cord? That's why it doesn't work. Even an ignorant wouldn't cut off a wire. You'll have to buy another one.
Next time USE your head.
I mean it..
By the way, a mouse does not need any software.

My "other" 'puter is a Compaq Deskpro '98SE...with 64 megs, 3 Gig hard drive, so I know what you mean.
I shut down everything except systray and explorer and security. I also have DSL Elite, 5.5 Mps...I can chat, download music, everything that I can do with my 512 Megger, I can do with my "dinosaur."
To get even more speed, do a "clean boot."
Start>Programs>Accessories>Sys Tools>Sys Info>Tools Menu>Sys Config Utility>Gen Tab>Selective Start up...
Clear following boxes:config sys file, autoexec.bat file, winstart.bat file, sys.ini file, win.ini file...
Load at start up group items
Click "OK"
Restart 'puter.
Now run defrag.
Now, back to Sys Config Utility Tool
Click "Normal start up" on Gen Tab
Click "OK"
Restart 'Puter...
.
Then close programs except the ones mentioned above...
It may seem like a mouthful....But older machines need additional TLC to keep up with the bigboys...
After this, get some black tape and a twist tie. Now tape the twist tie to the mouse, You now have a wireless mouse and a clean computer.
