Exercise... stretches... walking... cycling... swimming... anything that stretches the back bone is the only way to help...
I have arthritis in my spine and was predicted to be in a wheelchair by the age of fifty when diagnosed at twenty-three... (as my great uncle was, since arthritis is genetic to my family) but, I've had six kids and done more physical work, than most people do in six lives.
I move so fast that people sometimes think I'm shamming about being arthritic, until they see my hands are out of shape...
My advice it DON'T BE your condition, be YOURSELFand get on with life DESPITE it.
Bed rest is the old way... and it makes your back worse for longer... it seizes you up and creates other problems... staying on your feet and keeping moving, is the only way to relieve both back pain... and stay active.
I'm sixty-one a mum and gran and great gran... and keep being asked if I'm late forties.
I walk my dog every day... just bought a bike yesterday because living in a flat for two years and not running up and down the stair any more, made me gain a stone and slowed me down a bit... though people say I move too fast... I could feel myself slowing and I refuse to slow down!
I never use scales to measure weight... I go by my clothes size... and when my size 10-12 jeans (UK) felt too tight recently, I knew I'd gained too much, since I'm normally an 8-10.
Extra weight causes back problems to get much worse, since you put too much pressure on the spine and joints... so, go ride a bike like me... I got on it yesterday, because I felt some twinges returning in my spine... and I rode it from the shop feeling like a kid again... with that same first flush of freedom, it afforded when I learned to ride on two wheels at 4yrs old!
You never forget;-)
My car is frowning at me from the kerb!

If you can afford it, try an osteopath. Muscles can tighten and go into spasm to protect a joint injury and an osteopath can manipuate the back to release the spasm. Anti-inflammatories like Ibuprofen 3 times a day may help in time, but you need to keep it up. You also need to be sure that these are safe for you. Your doc can prescribe stronger ones than you can buy over the counter. God luck. Back pain is soooo draining. You have my sympathy.

The muscles to which you refer are commonly referred to as the "hamstrings." The actual names of the muscles are much less familiar than most in the body. they are 1) Biceps Femoris (both long and short head) 2) semimembranosus 3) semitendinosus. If the pain that you are suffering is muscular in origin...you likely have a "pulled hamstring". But see your doctor to be sure

Either learn how to stretch those tight muscles or go to a chiropractor and have him help as well as show you what you need to do to help yourself. The problem will not be resolved by taking meds. It is a structural problem that needs attention.

try the cat. rest your hands above your knees and bow your back up to the ceiling, the exhale and carve your stomach towards the floor. be sure your knees are slightly bent and about shoulder width apart, also keep your ab muscles tight, this adds to the strech in the back. a beginngers yoga class will help as well.

There is a great spray out there, even sprays upside down so you don't have to contort yourself to get it on your back, it's called "Stop Pain". I got mine at a drug store, such as CVS or Walgreens.
Other than that, a hot bath may help, along with some gentle stretching.

in my place, i have my muscle tightness done by a therapist(manghihilot) and then i think thats what you called cold inside your muscles..the therapist will just massage the part and the cold would come out of the skin..dont wet the part too so as not to induce cold again..
