My postman left a package on my doorstep while we weren't home. We returned late that night. Got our mail out of the mailbox, and to one of the envelopes was attached a note saying that the package was on the doorstep. NOT THERE, and hasn't been seen since. I know it's a federal felony if someone messes with your mailbox/mail, but what about my situation? I'm really hoping it is--lol!

I don't want to cause any trouble for my mail-lady. She actually goes out of her way to bring packages to me. If I have a package too large for the mailbox, she will come to my home and blow her home, and bring it to my door. This particular time, one of our vehicles was here, and she thought I was sleeping, and left the package. I really want to find the person that took it and prosecute them. Thanks for all your answers.

tampering with the mail at any level is a federal offense; especially in this day in age

Yes; I found the following information at the usps.gov website.

Delivered scan means that the mailman delivered the package to the location that is on the mailpiece.
Customer service agents are available at 1-800-222-1811 for questions or issues related to Domestic mail tracking:
Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. (Eastern Time)
Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time).

The postman is responsible for that. If you are not home normally he/she need to put some message in your mailbox and you need to go to the post office and pick up your package.
So now you can find your package.... what to do? Go to the post Office and fill a claim papers against the Postman.

It may depend on how the package was shipped, if U.S. Mail, it would be, but good luck in trying to get them to look into it. It there is any sort of "Delivery Confirmation", even if the mailman delivers to the wrong address (which has happened to me) they wash their hands of it.

If it is FedEx, UPS, or DHL, may not be, but most of those companies have automatic insurance on any package sent up to $100 worth, or more, if the sender paid the for it. If any of the latter, contact your sender to have them file a claim on your behalf.

Take it back to the post office, I've seen many set ups & people getting arrested for opening mail/packages not addressed to them.
