Variable valve timing. There are several different ways of accomplishing this, but the goal is to change the time the intake and exhaust valves open and close as a function of RPM. The timing that works well at low RPM does not work as well at high RPM, but on a conventional valvetrain you are stuck with just one setting. Variable valve timing can work in a few different ways - Honda's VTEC uses two separate sets of cams on one camshaft, while many other systems use actuators in the cam pulley to turn the camshaft a little bit.
