I love music. I listen to it 24 hours a day, all the time. When I don't listen to it, I get mood swings and cranky and I need it back on. Is this not a dependency on music. Is something you depend on not classed as an addicition? I feel it is. If anything is done repeatedly, is that not an addicition? So, is music a drug in its own right?

Show me a music pill, and I'll call it a drug.

It is not ingested, injected.... but it does calm the salvage beast or it can create a salvage beast depending on the music. I have a special son and I used it as a form of a tranquilizer it altered his mood so in my opinion it should be certain types that is. And like drugs it would be experimental to the person also. A lot of study has gone into people with mental disabilities and the ability to write, changing of music taste, as well as the emotional effects it has on them.
Excellent question. Read the article in a neurosurgeons office who deals with a lot of brain damaged patients. who would have thought, sorry you would have. I give you A +

Interesting question. I was just last night explaining that concept to a friend. There is a book I read many years ago titled THE LAW OF LOVE. In this book music is outlawed for the majority of people, dependent upon one's level of evolution. The people who still dwelled on the emotional plane were not allowed to listen to music because it played upon their emotions to such a degree. It was only the few who had grown beyond being swayed emotionally and who resided in a more mental plane that could purchase any form of music.
For the emotional types music was illegal thus it was treated like an illegal substance. They could be fined, arrested or charged with intent to deliver.
Personally, I find listening to the sounds of nature more uplifting and beautiful.

The definition of a drug is somethin that makes you feel good temporarily, but is also bad for you at the same time. Not just cuz of the dependancy on it, but cuz its slowly killing your body, right? And as far as i know, music doesnt do you any harm, its actually just one of those very few, simply nice things in life. Different people have different things that make them happy..you know the small things like movies or art or walks in the park..things like that. So, i´d say its a pretty nice when you do find the thing that makes you happy...so dont worry about it, just have fun and enjoy your music. :)

Unless you listen to only one genre of music 24/7, then I think in your case it can't be classed as a "drug" lol. But a possible example of being addicted to music like a drug is, you listen to ONLY one genre (example, Rock! or any other genre that is immediately categorized under rock -- like hard rock, nu metal, punk rock, rock 'n roll, industrial rock, heavy metal and the like), where your mood relies on it heavily and a sudden switch of genre (like pop) could trigger cruel mood. If that in your case is true, then you need a serious help, my friend.

Music is very addictive. I love music. It does something to my soul. I believe it should be classified as a drug because it has the power to soothe,to accelerate your heart, to make you mad or to make you sad. It makes me drive faster and it also slows me down when I am listening to the radio in the car. I never thought of it this way before. I believe,A day without music,is a like a day without sunshine. I need it also.

Music is a stimulus on the brain just like television or undulating waves on the beach or a spring rain. Your brain has obviously become accustomed to operating properly only with a certain amount of stimulus. It's a cultural phenomenon today, especially among young people because we are so accustomed to constant stimulus--hence the success of the iPod.
