Not heard of that famous benchmaker's then - The In Memory of Edith Benchmaker Company?

Strange names some companies have - all my books were published by "Library Property - Do Not Remove".

Go figure.

Addition to my previous answer:;;

If he purchased it as a new bench from a reputable outlet I would say the dispatchers have picked the correct bay but the incorrect item I would suggest that the Bench with a plaque to "Edith" was a special order. and that Edith's loved ones are still awaiting their bench.

I also think that it is a sad reflection on the morality and mentality of so many people that their first thoughts are that the bench was gained by illegal methods. I would bet that there aren't many people in those who have answered this question, who can honestly say that they have not gained a monetary advantage through ill gotten gains, " Let those without sin throw the first stone"
I f you don't understand that. how about "People who live in glass houses should not throw stones"

I dont think the plaque was on the tree before it became a bench so logic tells me that someone is missing Edith's bench, a poor wee man with nowhere to sit perhaps.

IF what you are saying is true then the bench has been stolen probably from a cemetery which is the lowest of the low, Someone has bought it in memory of either a wife,mother ,or sister,has your brother got no conscience? That is truly an evil act,but he will be paid back tenfold, and when he is ask him to remember this story.may god forgive you I couldn't

Yep, unless it was sold off buy the original owners, i.e local council, or relatives of Edith. Looks like someones been visiting the local graveyards.

Have him put a second plaque below saying "Love, Archie". Then it won't be hokey. He can tell people it came from "The Bunkers" and it's "All in the Family".
