Try to use a keyboard test program:

Maybe you need to clean it or purchase another keyboard there cheap.
Try this one...it's a mini so you could bring it along with you.

If the CTRL key is not working it can be any of 3 things. You can have something stuck under it, in which case the key won't depress all the way. If this is the case, you can take a small, straight blade screwdriver and gently pry the key up to get under it for cleaning. On the other hand, If the key works normally, then it's the electronics.

When you press a keyboard key, you activate what is called a "Hall Effect" switch... it's a little magnet that's attached to the key mechanics and acts as a plunger in a little coil of wire, this results in a small electrical pulse which is picked up by the electronics in the keyboard and acts as a switch. The wires are very fragile and can be broken by repeadtedly striking a key too hard... I'm not saying you did this, but I have seen people just bang on their keyboards and then wonder why they have problems.

Your problem can be fixed, but it will have to go into a shop for service or, preferably, back to HP and, depending on the age of the laptop, you may be better off replacing it.

Open a program like Notepad (Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad). The program gives you various shortcuts (like all others) which use the Ctrl key. Use Ctrl+O to open a file. If your Ctrl key functions the Browse box will pop up.

You could possibly use the on-screen keyboard which has been bundled in most Windows versions post 2000. It can be found in Start > Programs > Accessories > Accessibility > Onscreen keyboard. This keyboard highlights the keys that you press on your actual keyboard and you can get the idea.

There is no other way to find out whether all the keys on your keyboard are working correctly unless you use them to type each of the characters that they represent. It's a minute's work. Why wouldn't you be willing to do it? However, that is not all the work that's involved. After you've typed all the uppercase and lowercase letters, all the numbers, all the symbols and punctuation marks, you'll need to try out the F1 through F12 keys, the PrintScreen key, and all the other special function keys. Even so, the whole process should only take two minutes or so.

Just punch the keys and see if they result in the effect they're supposed to give. If not there are sprays to clean your keyboard with or you can take out the key that causes problems and clean it manually (Q-tips and a little cleaning alcohol). To bring it for repairs is only worthwhile if you are still in your warranty period. If not you will most likely be scammed up to a few 100 dollars.

Have you changed your key settings? You could go into the control panel and check the configuration of the keypad before you pay to have someone look at it.
