this is easy. i did a report on the actual reason 4 they r called that and i have QHs myself.
The Quarter Horse was named because of it’s ability to run a quarter of a mile faster than any other horse. Some Quarter Horses have been timed and went as fast as 55 mph when they reached the finish line. The Quarter Horse was the first native horse in America. Quarter Horses are bred to barrel race and used for rodeos.

It is breed of horse developed in America to do a variety of things.Work on a ranch work cattle rodeo and race short distances.
They run 1/4 of a mile when they race. This came from the working cowboys wanting to see who's horse was the fastest. They were riding their working horses and competing against each other.
They are now registered with AQHA and are one of the most versatile horses around.

back in the old days Quarters were hauled in wagons all over and the horses who hauled them were called quarter horses. :-) The real reason I heard was they were spefically bred to run the best a 1/4 or Quarter mile so they were known as Quartermile Horses that was shortened to Quarter Horse. But that is what I heard somewhere. At any rate they aren't as cool as squirrels and my Squirrel Army.

Quarter horses are a breed of horse. They are probably one of the more versatile breeds. They are the fastest sprinters. (yes, they can sprint faster than thoroughbreds, but thouroughbreds are best at long distances) They were used in the west to haul things. They are stocky and muscular...also very beautiful and cute. They are awesome at western pleasure and huntseat, and can also be trained to jump.
