I had the same problem ages ago. Cant explain how i did it but here's the site that helped me crack it. its the link for the troubleshooter. You should manage it now.
Put a couple of partitions in when your formatting it say 10GB and 30 GB
Take big files like music and pictures out of my documents and put them on your desktop.
use My Briefcase and drag My documents into it; then all you have to do is update it. Press F1 key and type in briefcase and it will walk you through it
its worth giving it a bit of thought regarding how to lay your external hard-drive out as it will save a lot of time when your backing it up
feel free to email me if you need any more advice or ideas

I think you have fixed your Extern'l hard thru a USB port in the front of the PC right ? Remove it & connect it to a port in the back side of the PC & check wether its been recognised.. It should as those ports are directly fixed to the motherboard unlike the Front USB ports are leading thru wires & it goes off after dense usage sometimes.... Try doing it.... Then umm i'm sure you know how to Format it after that :) - Dr.Doom

ok, right click over your computer, click manage, the go to storage area, if you find it, then it works and you can format it from here, if not, then replace it, think it comes with warranty.
