Depends on your background, however algebra and some trig are requisits but not of critical importance. Calculus is a tool of analysis, and that's all about noticing things.
Most courses and texts start off with a no brainer application of calculus, which I think isn't the way to go.
You need an idea of limits and infinitesimals. I recommend G.H. Hardy's olden goldie- A course in Pure Mathematics (really old but well worth reading)
If that's a bit too abstract, start with something like the Calculus Bible or Gilbert Strang's Calculus(available free as ebook on the MIT site, search for it)
Start off with Differential calculus first though and then you can appreciate that integral calculus concerns anti-derivatives.

Start from the very beginning. Read up some history regarding calculus. Who is the person? What was he working on that led him to invent calculus? What does the word 'calculus' mean? What other significant development from then till the present days in calculus? etc.

The above is also suitable for any subjects, maths, science, and many others.

Specifically for calculus, have clear understanding of the basics, i.e. limits and infinitesimals.

One of the ways is to develop an interest in the subject.

Understand what Calculus can be used for. For example, you own a factory and you need to produce can food. What kind of shape should the can food container be? Your goal is to squeeze the maximum volume (the actual food) into a minimum amount of material to be used for the container (tin). Of course, a sphere shape will not work, since it will roll off the shelf at the supermarket. So if you go for a cylindrical shape, how tall should it be and what should be the diameter of the base circle?

Calculus can be used to find the minimum and maximum solutions to problems. There are many other applications. It's a powerful tool developed by Newton.

Start with research on functions that is draw the graphs find the minima/maxima, asymtotic behaviour. That is the base.

The most important is that you know what you are doing.
Most of the things in function research can be done with common sense without mathematical "laws"
