There are several things that can cause this problem. The fan motor could be bad,. It could be a problem with the temperature sensor. You may have a problem with the fan relay, or you may have a blown fuse or fuseable link!

The fan relay is known for causing problems, and the fan motor does go bad.

Get a new thermostat for about $14. This is easily replaced. The thermostat con trolls the fan and the tells the colling system when to circulate water. Even if this isn't the problem, when ever a car over heats, you should replace the thermostat.

It could be the fan motor, wiring or a thermo switch. You could unplug the thermo switch and by using a shunt see if the fan will start to turn. There may be a fuse or a small circuit breaker. The book that came with the car should tell you where the fuses are located.

This happaned to my car.
Your best bets:
1. Fan relay - tell the fan to turn on.
2. Fan moter - self explanatory.
3. Connections - make sure they are all clean so the signal is strong and steady
4. Thermostat - I only bring this up due to the fact that you said it was overheating and it is commonly overlooked
5. Fan casing - fan could be jammed.

If I were you I would replace the thermostat and the fan sensor first and see what happens. If the fan doesn't kick in after replacing the sensor then go get another fan. That should do the trick for you.

Assuming it is an electric fan the fan motor may simply have gone bad, they do burn up in time. Or the sensor that tells the fan to turn on might be bad.
