Well, he might need a bubbler which gives his more oxygen. Goldfish need oxygen from a pump, connected to a long tubing that extends into the tank and connnected to a bubbler. It can be all sort of different bubblers, either a stone type, plastic type of a tube, or just ask the pet store employee. They are very cooperative. I have lots of gold fish and they just like to swin at the top some times. The noise, I don't know about. Some of the bigger ones used to make a smacking noise to let me know they were hungry, but I tried to discourage that as they can get too much air and develope a bladder problem and die from it. Change their water regularly, and get a filter to make sure the water is clean so they will not get a desease. If you have at least a 10 gal, ofr 20 gal, you can get him a little companion. They love that, and also float the plastic bag first for about 30 min. to get the water in the bag close to the water in the tank so they won't go into shock. The filter is a box, connected to a wall plug, has a filter in it, and then a long tube to pull the water up through it and through the filter. If you do all these things, you goldfish will live a long time. I have one that is 4 yrs old, but I have about 20 fish altogether. You cannot put too many goldfish in one tank, if they are big and the tank is not any larger than a 20 gal., there is too much ammonia, and it is just better to have only two in either a 10 gal, or 20. If you go bigger tank, then more is ok. You don't want to get them too crowded. The fish like to eat on the plants, but it won't give them enough oxygen, so go out and get him a bubbler.

how deep is the water /big is your tank (too small a tank he doesn't have enough space do not use a bowl)
how often do you change the water.( you should change regularly)
is it a live plant (remove and use plastic plants)
how often do you feed him (he could be looking for food but do not overfeed small pinch twice a day should do in morning and before you go to bed every 12 hours and a little bit in the day now and again as they are always hungry )
do you have gravel etc in the tank
do you have a pump/filter system
try changing his environment and adding him a friend also use tap safe and a tonic in the water do not have too many
ornaments fish need at least 4 pints of water each to live happily.
you must keep his tank clean and toxin free for him to be happy.
a air pump can also help if you take out and top up the water with a bit of fresh now and again

My fish only go to the top when they want feeding. do you have any kind of filtration system in there and oxygenation maybe if there is not enough oxygen in the water your fish is trying to get some that is why it may be at the top of the tank. An oxygen plant alone I don't think is enough. Also buy it a mate. One fish alone looks sad.

Goldfish requires plenty of oxygen. Get a longer air stones such that more oxygen can be dissolve in the water or you can have a few air stones located at different position in the tank. Swimming to the top is a sign of trying to breathe at the surface of water. Your golden will soon die if no aeration is added. Be fast.

he's gasping for air, the water is not right for him
there needs to be oxygen in the water and he needs to be in a tank not a bowl.
you can buy oxygenating plants and an air pump to put o2 in your tank, most of all though the area of the tank needs to be large. fish get their oxygen from a large space at the top of the tank.
good luck with him x

your fish makes noise??? that's awesome!! and he swims at the top because he likes the view! lol, no, really, he probably isn't getting enough oxygen. try getting one of those things that you stick in the back of the tank (it looks like a long rod, the length of them varies, you can get one that is the length of the tank). the one that makes the bubble curtain go up the back. those aireate the water a lot better than just the small ones that make one stream of bubbles.
good luck and you should try to teach him how to say words since he is making noise!! :)

The oxygen tank mustn't be working properly. The fish stays at the top of the water because there's more oxygen there.

oxygen unless its swimming upside down....

what noise do fish make?
prob due to lack of oxygen a plant wont do it by itself, and depnds on size of tank/bowl too, get a pump and get the water going

failing that is there anything by the tank? my fgish came to the top as was expecting food, and if anyone put hands near top or anything was hanging over by top they'd swim along surface...

How much surface is there for water/oxygen transfer? Your fish seems to need oxygen. Try a larger container with a lot of area for oxygen to come in contact with the water.

he could have a bad case of wind, all that seaweed in the food would explain the gas and why its swimming at the top,try to submerse it deeper and the water preasure will humanly squeeze the wind out of the little fella. good luck ps.open windows\(tip 1.the higher it floats the more gas) (tip 2.the higher it floats in the water the further open your window goes)-(tip 3-dont wait for noxious plume to emit , just stand over it with a lighter and let nature take its course. he should be prancing around the tank like a spring lamb...for a few seconds it looks like the little fella has a NOS tank fitted to his but.......good luck :)
