"I got your back" is the same as "I have your six." It is used during war or fighting. The person who says it means that they will do their best to prevent attack coming from behind you. The first is usually used on the ground and the second by pilots in the air. Pilots used a time position on the clock to indicate the position of another pilot, especially the enemy. Twelve o'clock is directly in front of a pilot.

In current terms, if you are facing difficult circumstances, the person who says "I've got your back," means they will support your endeavour.

Humans being the fallible creatures that they are may calculate the risk factor to them and can take the course of least resistance, that is, join the stronger power, stay silent or run. If you choose your friends wisely, the person will stand by you. The person may be also under attack and unable to protect you.
