Hurt yourself, how? Do you mean physically or emotionally? Don't hurt yourself physically, that is not love, that is a deep feeling of rejection or something that you need to get out in the open with counseling. Something from childhood or a feeling of not worth anything.... Get help on that one.

Anyway, this is just a obsessive love. It is not good to have this kind of an obsession. It is like a curse, and it is up to you to break it. You have to see this person for real, and not through rose colored glasses. You are putting this person up as some kind of a God, and that is only going to drive you insane. You have to remove yourself from this person, and get out and meet others. There are some people that you just feel like you must have, or that they are going to save you, protect you, and that is just crap. If you do not break away from this person, you will just go in deeper and deeper into your depression. Knowingly and repeatedly, meaning you just go up and stick you finger into the turned on light socket? Just be your best friend, look into the mirror and talk to yourself, and say, look, you know what to do, and then say, you are a good person, and do not deserve this. Just get the heck out of there. When you get in this position, that opens the door for them to be abusive, if they want to, especially if they are not as crazy about you.

If you are saying that what makes guys just go crazy in love, etc., well their private part is thinking for them, and that is not very good either. . . Have a good talk with that guy too.
If both parties feel the same, hey, it might be the real thing, and just get married. .

i guess maybe the question really is: Why are we so desperate for love that we will hurt ourselves to get it/keep it?

depending on your up bringing/background and how sensitive a person you are, there's a good chance that your soul is crying out for love and connection that you are not getting/have not gotten.
you have this need that is so intense and has not been met in your life.
so when someone finally gives you the love and attention you've been craving for so long, you end up doing dumb things to keep it around.
but this is where your sense of self respect must kick in and realize that having someone else's love at the expense of your own well being is not worth it.
as hard as it is--MOVE ON!
Get to know yourself a litle better before you jump into your next relationship and it just might be a lot healthier and happier than this one.

It's because you can't decide who your heart chooses to love. When you realize how deeply you care about someone, you're just willing to do about anything to make sure that person is happy, healthy, and safe, with or without you-- even if that means you have to stand by and get hurt in the process of ensuring their happiness.

Love sometimes requires sacrifice to be true.

Hope this helps a bit.

Stress, my friend, and the condition is known as learned helpless. Exercise for the stress [even a lot of walking is fine] and only give her loving when she's nice. Us men have more power than we realise, she needs you for the emotional comfort you provide, well only give it when she's friendly.
