For one, only the cream of the crop of Japanese all star caliber position players come over to play in the ML. I would be willing to bet that they don't hit as well in the ML as they did in Japan.

There have been some good pitchers, Nomo,Sasaki,Hasegawa, but not many that I can think of. It could be one of several things. (1)The best of the best Japanese pitchers don't come over. (2)The hitters in the ML are better than they are in Japan. (3)The Japanese pitchers do not adjust well to the different style of play.(4) I suspect that pitching in Japan is at a premium just as it is in the ML they probable pay their elite pitchers well enough to keep them..

The answer is probable a combination of those and several other factors...

One who is having a very good year and is getting very little recognition is the Dodgers closer Takashi Saito, if his name was Jonathan Papelbon and he pitched for the Red Sox he would be the greatest thing since sliced bread...haha

Takashi Saito
ERA-2.24 SV-14 SVO-15 IP-60.1 H-36 HR-3 BB-19 SO-81

Jonathan Papelbon
ERA-0.89 SV-32 SVO-37 IP-61.0 H-33 HR-3 BB-12 SO-63

I have learned not to pay much attention to a relievers ERA, they can have the same numbers and one pitchers ERA can be twice the others...Are Papelbon's numbers better, yes, but only very-very slightly...

2. Many of the Japanese pitchers do not reach the major league level yet. The MLB hitters are just way too powerful to the Japanese...
